Chester

Saturday 11th August

We decided not to take the boat into Chester. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chester
There are several locks and it would take over 2 hours there and another 2 back. Walking it would take an hour. It was a lovely day so we set off with Dex.

I loved this little duck house called Duckingham Palace! 😀

Dex went for a swim but then decided there were too many ducks!

Dex hates moorhens!
We went into the park and had lunch in one of the cafés there. It was amazingly good value and we found out later it is a non profit making charity helping disadvantaged individuals. http://www.giftcafe.co.uk/gift-cafe-the-lodge/
We had to keep Dex on the lead as there were so many squirrels and he hates them too!

We found the ruins of an old church. This is the Eastern chapel of St John the Baptist. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_John_the_Baptist%27s_Church,_Chester

We walked down to the river and over Queens bridge.

The bridge spans the river Dee which is the same river that went into the Llangollen canal.

These luxury cruisers were providing a lunch sightseeing tourlasting 2 hours. They went really fast.

We found the remains of the Roman Amphitheatre.

One of the gates of the city wall. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chester_city_walls

We found the city wall walk. It goes right round Chester.
There were great views over the river Dee.

We discovered it was Pride day in Chester which explained why there were so many people. It was a great atmosphere with live bands. We would have gone in to watch if we hadn't had Dex with us.

We picked up the city wall walk again. There were great views over the racecourse.

We could see a bird of prey flying demonstration taking place in the grounds of this grand house.

 An old pigeon loft.

We stopped for a welcome pint at the Lock keepers tavern beside the canal. Then walked back to the boat.

That evening we had a nice meal in the Cheshire cat pub.
