Egham to Hampton

Wednesday 19th July and the sun is shining again! We set off from Egham just after 10am. As we set off we saw a pair of swans with 6 cygnets.
More Grand design houses and then we arrived at Bell Weir Lock with it's beautiful Magna Carta 800 year mural.

After this we pass through Staines.

At Penton Hook Lock there is quite a commotion going on.

A male swan is trying to get near some ducklings and we watch as the mother duck gives him a warning to back off. Clearly he doesn't heed her warning and the next moment she starts attacking him! It seemed unbelievably brave of her given the size difference but she started pecking him again and again until he finally swam off with his feathers ruffled. It was amazing to watch and shows how protective mums are and woe betide anyone or anything trying to hurt her babies!

After this we go down through Chertsey and see quite a few house boats in all different styles.

Then we arrive at Sunbury Lock and are greeted by the Canadian geese synchronised swimming team!

More interesting buildings in Sunbury.

Also this quite spectacular house boat.
Soon we are approaching Hampton court and as we pass under the bridge we get our first glimpse of Hampton Court Palace. We had no idea it was possible to moor outside the gates but there are boats moored there. Unfortunately no free spaces but as we pass by, one narrowboat leaves and so we are able to turn around and grab it! 😊

I never expected to be moored outside a palace, has to be the most prestigious mooring yet!
We did visit Hampton Court Palace and I will cover this in a separate blog page.
